Keep the Lead Out! An Important Message from North Kootenai Water District
Providing safe water to our customers is the MOST important thing we do! North Kootenai Water and Sewer District is proud to provide water that is not considered corrosive to our service meters supplying your home or business.
If your home or business was constructed before the 1986 Safe Drinking Water Act Lead Bank, your service line material may possibly contain some lead components that may leach into your drinking water as it travels from our service meter through your service connection and plumbing components.
Below is information from the Environmental Protection Agency on the health effects of lead, steps you can choose to take to reduce exposure to lead in drinking water, and information about opportunities to verify the material of the service line.
- Health effects of lead – Exposure to lead in drinking water can cause serious health effects in all age groups. Infants and children can have decreases in IQ and attention span. The children of women who are exposed to lead before or during pregnancy can have an increased risk of these adverse health effects. Adults can have increased risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney or nervous system problems.
